Get ready to bring in the New Year with a dash of sparkle and oomph of panache! For many, New Year’s Eve represents a night for parties and get-togethers, to get dolled up in your best dressed outfit and take those fashion risks that you normally can’t during the rest of the year. This year that daring outfit that is now stocked in most stores from department to boutique is shine!
Don’t be afraid to get a little flashy! If you’ve stepped into any clothing store these past two months, you’ve most likely laid eyes on sparkle. Sequins are taking over every outfit this holiday season from entire dresses, miniskirts, and shoes, to bags, hairpieces, and jewelry! Available now in all shapes and sizes, you can find sequined looks in new bold colors such as bronze and navy, as opposed to the classic and commonly seen black and silver. What I love best about these dazzling additions is the way they can step up an outfit without cleaning out your wallet and can be worn at any age. The high shine element offers a look of luxury while the cut and style of the piece tells you for what age group it could be worn. For example, an all sequins dress suggests a more contemporary feel while a garnished bolero or suit jacket, be more appropriate for an older, modest individual.
Running alongside sequins this season are metallic inspired ensembles. High profile celebrities such as Heidi Klum, Alexa Chung, and Lauren Conrad have been trend setters in showing off their metallic wear and how to differentiate a popular look with another bold accessory. When you wear such a strong piece as a sparkled out dress or skirt, it’s important to remember to keep the other pieces of your look clean and simple. A little can go a long way as Nicole Richie and Scarlett Johannson have demonstrated by wearing the metallic trend with their make-up, such as pretty champagne colored eyeliner or all over gold eye shadow. Even try a metallic nail polish a la Ginnifer Goodwin to show off your glitz and New Year spirit!
I know many of you, as I am myself, are thinking about how to save a penny or two after much gift buying and holiday shopping. We all want to start off the New Year being financially on track. With that being said, don’t be ashamed about wearing that same dress in your closet, yet again, to another social event. You can easily change the view and feel of your garment by adding on a girl’s best friend – accessories! Opt for a chunky necklace instead of the classic pearl drop for your evening; or try a favorite of mine and add a glitz and glamour enthused headpiece into your hairstyle. Just in time for mixing and mingling, put a sparkle into your step with glitter dusted heels. There are endless options to consider when choosing an accessory. While I always think you should be comfortable and confident in your choices, I urge you to think and dress “outside your box” for New Year’s Eve because for that night, there is no such thing as being overly dressed up.
Since New Year’s Eve is all about the glitz and glamour, fashion, and celebrating making it through another year, I wish everyone an enjoyable evening filled with laughter, love, and inner shine. May 2011 be all you hope for and more!
